Breaking the Inevitable Sales Slump
This week we delivered an episode about breaking out of a sales slump. A sales slump is inevitable, we choose this challenging career and it’s bound to happen at some point. We discussed a number of steps, and after reflecting on it we wanted to share a couple deeper items.
First – check out Ryan Holiday’s book “The Obstacle Is The Way.” It’s a brilliant book that I’ve read several times. The best quote lines up directly to this career: “If we are going to achieve our goals, our Strength and Will must be tested. The path of least resistance is a terrible teacher. Are you strong enough to go a few more rounds, if it comes to that? Are you comfortable with challenges? Does uncertainty bother you? How does pressure feel? Life will demand an answer. You chose this for yourself! A life of doing things. Now you better be prepared for what it entails. It’s your armored plating. It doesn’t make you invincible, but it prepares you for when life shifts, and it always does.” It feels like this book was written for our industry, and I’ve gifted this book to many people over the years (Amazon link).
Second – get fit! We talked about it a bit on the podcast and this is something I’m passionate about. The downstream effects of being in shape are numerous. Exercise rewires mental toughness, helps with energy, builds self-confidences, and best of all reduces stress. I got started years ago by just running (jogging!) one mile every day in December. Over the years it led to marathons, triathlons and Ironman events. It just starts with building a small habit. Get on the bike, get your running shoes on, or just get to the gym – but if we can commit to starting this habit you’ll be able to have much better control on your stress and these slumps as they present themselves!
